Crabgrass is aggressive in Bel Air’s hotter, more open areas: the front lawns along the Emmorton Road corridor, the south-facing slopes in the 21014 communities, anywhere that full sun and summer heat combine. Pre-emergent applied in late March, timed before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit, is the most effective control. Timing is everything here; a week late and a portion of the crabgrass seeds have already germinated.
Wild violet is the other persistent offender in Bel Air, particularly in shadier lawns in the older neighborhoods along Tollgate Road and the streets off Patterson Mill. It’s one of the harder broadleaf weeds to eliminate because the waxy leaf surface resists standard herbicide absorption and the root system is robust.
