We can seed in partial shade with the right blend — fine fescue varieties tolerate lower light than standard tall fescue. In areas with very heavy shade (fewer than 3 hours of direct sun), we’ll tell you honestly if seeding is unlikely to succeed long-term. Sometimes the better answer is to mulch those areas or use shade-tolerant groundcovers rather than repeatedly spending money on seed that can’t compete.
My soil tests very acidic. What do I need to do before seeding?
A lime application to raise pH is the first step. We recommend pelletized lime before overseeding when the soil pH is below 6.0. Ideally lime goes down 30 to 60 days ahead of seeding to begin working, though even same-time applications are better than doing nothing. Low pH limits germination and suppresses the soil biology that supports young turf, so fixing it is foundational.
